Tips on Becoming a Master of Presentations

In creating an effective presentation, there is actually no secret, you just need to establish a clear objective, plan and organize your materials and use the appropriate visual aids. You need to know your objectives first to have a successful presentation because your objectives will drive your presentation and move your audience toward your end goals. Your end goals may either result to your attendees taking a particular action, adopting a new perspective or responding to the facts and information. To establish these goals, you need to have careful planning because your objectives become the foundation of your presentation’s content, organization, and visual aids.

Aside from establishing your objectives and analyzing your own goals, you also have to consider your audience’s needs and expectations. Through understanding the expectations and needs of your audience, it allows you to choose the appropriate points of emphasis in your presentation, develop an effective and useful level of detail, select and prepare appropriate visual aids, and create a tone that is sensitive to the circumstance of your audience. Your next step must involve careful planning and organizing of materials to help you in tailoring your approach, and selecting the appropriate visual aids allow you to build effective one-way or two-way communication to your audience. When planning your material, don’t wait to prepare your presentation, prepare an outline, analyze your audience and choose appropriate presentation style and visual aids.

Although aesthetics plays a vital role in effective visual presentation, try to avoid using fancy designs, special characters, loud colors, logos or unnecessary decorations that can shift the attention of your audience away from the important things you need to discuss. Ensure that you have a readable material by using at least a 24-point font so that everyone in the room can clearly read your material, and avoid using a photocopy of a standard printed page as a display. It is also important to keep the number of words in a minimum level and keep the content up tp a maximum of eight lines per slide share. It is useless having a good content but poor legibility, so it is better to sacrifice content for legibility. Don’t use a lot of curves in your text, rather use easily readable fonts such as Arial and Sans Serif which are easier to read than Times Roman or Monotype Corsiva. Use light letters such as white or yellow on a dark background like dark blue or navy green, use equations sparingly and don’t fill up the slide.

Print your handouts on a wide format printer so you can use bigger sheets of paper and you can use them as a backdrop as well. You can use digital materials such as Powerpoint presentations for a more advanced and state of the art presentation.
